Duolecture about The Importance of Tourism for Sustainable Regional Development

21 January 2015

Duolecture by Bart Lens from Lens°Ass architects and curator of Bokrijk Brandmerkt, The Shift A+U architects and Gene Bertrand, program director of Discovery Centre Continuum.

Bart Lens from Lens°Ass architects and curator of Bokrijk Brandmerkt talks about how he is going to re-vamp the Bokrijk Open Air Museum and put it back on the map. To do this, the focus shall be on the "innovative retrieval of craftsmanship, where the past is the basis for the development of today and tomorrow."

The Shift A+U architects and Gene Bertrand, program director of Discovery Centre Continuum, talk about the C-City Kerkrade, which is currently under construction. C-City will be a constellation of buildings and public space in the centre of Kerkrade comprising: Continuum C-square, Columbus, and Cube – the Netherland's first design museum in the Netherlands.

Through the lens of architecture, questions such as the following will be addressed: what is the role of tourism in the sustainable development of the Euregio? How does this kind of infotainment relate to the existing offering within the landscape of existing cultural institutions and what is the changing role of the public? And how can we, through design, engineering, science, and craft, connect the rich past of the Euregio with its present and its future?
