Architecture lecture: Dirk Jan Postel and Benoît Mater

The Roman Museum in Heerlen

2 November 2022

In the autumn, Bureau Europa organizes the Limburg Quarters lecture series, each evening with a different city as a case study. The four Limburg cities from the Euregion are discussed in four lectures. Cities that have each implemented an extension or expansion based on their own vision, that want to make neighbourhoods more liveable, add more greenery to the city, or just want to make a cultural or historical identity visible.

On Wednesday 2 November, architect Dirk Jan Postel speaks about the Roman Museum in Heerlen with commenter Benoît Mater of the Roman Museum. You're very welcome for the lecture and a complimentary drink.

The Roman Museum in Heerlen
Wednesday 2 November, 5.30 pm

In Heerlen, the Roman past is getting more attention. New, interactive exhibitions at the Thermenmuseum present Coriovallum more beautifully than ever. But the building itself leaves much to be desired. The remains of the oldest stone structure in the Netherlands are hardly protected by it. Time for a new shell around the bathhouse. Architect Dirk Jan Postel (Kraaijvanger Architects) talks about their eye-catching design for the new Roman Museum.

The new museum is part of the Roman Quarter, the area development around the town hall and the complete transformation of the city center. The design by Kraaijvanger and TomDavid architecten shows a building in public green with a lot of space around it. It is also intertwined with the new city offices opposite the street and is a magnet for architecture enthusiasts. The story of the Roman past is therefore not just told inside the museum. The building will become a new architectural landmark for Heerlen that speaks of what can be seen inside as well as in the rest of the city.

With commenter Benoît Mater of Roman Museum Heerlen.
