Maastricht has a history of hiding, concealment, and fortification. From medieval city walls to later defensive structures that have shaped the cityscape for centuries—or have only been reopened to the public in the past decade. Air-raid shelters, bunkers, lookout posts, and tunnels remain hidden from view. During the Second World War, a strong underground infrastructure of shelters was created, for people as well as for world-famous artworks. During the threats of the Cold War, Civil Defence (BB) made preparations throughout the city. After all, you never know when an emergency might strike.

Distance: 5 km
Duration: 2–2.5 hours
