Aldegonda Hoeberechts
1798-1878
A life in ten paintings and ten letters

The exhibition 'de Vrouw P. Regout' encompasses an "undisciplined historical" investigation that has resulted in ten paintings (measuring 60 x 63 cm) about the life of Aldegonda Hoeberechts (Maastricht, 1798–1878). She was married to the glass and ceramics manufacturer Petrus Regout. Her role in the expansion of this Maastricht industrial empire has largely gone unrecognised. This project, therefore, also serves as a "reclamation" of a forgotten history. The paintings are accompanied by ten letters addressed to Hoeberechts — one letter for each painting. These letters are, of course, imaginary, addressed to someone who passed away long ago. Christiane Steffens explains her paintings, poses questions to Hoeberechts, and shares her perspective on the life and work of this industrialist’s wife.
