The Meuse (Maas) is the heart of Maastricht. It gave the city its name and influences life there in more ways than you might expect. Maastricht originated where the Jeker meets the Meuse. The Romans built a castrum and later a bridge at this ford, calling it Traiectum ad Mosam, meaning “crossing place on the Meuse.” For a long time, Maastricht was a city across the Meuse rather than along or beside it. The river functioned mainly as a waterway, and high walls along its banks made it impossible for local residents to walk along it or even catch a glimpse of it.

Access to the riverbanks as we know them today dates from the late 1990s, when architect Jo Coenen developed a master plan for the entire riverside. The infrastructure was redesigned to allow people, for the first time, to directly engage with the Meuse. The river and the canals surrounding the city became a key part of the urban infrastructure, giving rise to unexpected places within the cityscape. This tour invites you to follow the water and be guided to surprising locations. Discover, through local stories and anecdotes, how the Maastricht community lives with its river.
