Transitions

Film Festival in Sphinxkwartier

9 till 14 March 2023

Transitions is a celebration of adventurous filmmaking in its many shapes and sounds. Taking place over six days in Maastricht (NL), it brings together boundary-defying artists and those who appreciate and support them. Transitions features a free exhibition in fourteen locations as well as a cinema program.

Transitions has been initiated by Video Power and is happy to count Jester, Cinema Lumière, Bonnefanten Museum, Jan van Eyck Academy, LIMA, Odapark, IMAI, Bureau Europa and Viewmaster Projects among its partners. Support comes from the City of Maastricht, Elisabeth Strouven Fonds, Grensverleggers, Mondriaan Fund, the Netherlands Film Fund, Pictoright, Panasonic, Provincie Limburg and Stichting Sphinxkwartier.

With unique film programs, installations, artist talks and workshops, Transitions is a
homecoming for intuitive filmmakers and open-hearted audiences.

On view at Bureau Europa In his film Global Groove (1973), the Korean-American artist Nam June Paik presents how world communication is shaped by mass media. The video presents the landscape of tomorrow. Avant-garde meets pop culture and references and imaginations from all over the world. A hectic collage of sound and image in which the video is brought together into a complex composition by a 'video synthesizer'. The film will be screened as part of the Transition video art festival from 9 to 14 March 2023, which will be organized during TEFAF week.

Nam June Paik was a famous Fluxus artist and is considered the inventor of video art. The American artist of South Korean origin has been able to carry out his studies in philosophy, aesthetics and composition in performances with electronics. Paik's later work combined sculpture with music and images: in installations with monitors, video players and televisions as protagonists, he developed his own technologies, such as the video synthesizer.
