The Grensmaas in Itteren
12 November 2016On Saturday 12 November, Bureau Europa organises a tour of Itteren, the epicentre of the Grensmaas project launched in 2008.
In the context of the Maas Paradox exhibition, this tour provides insight into the influence of the Meuse and its recent expansion on the town of Itteren and its inhabitants.
Grensmaas is currently the largest river project in the Netherlands. The operation extends over a forty-three-kilometre section of the Meuse from Maastricht to Echt-Susteren. Already in the nineteen-eighties, there were plans to allow more space for the Meuse in Limburg. The plans became a matter of urgency after the floods of 1993 and 1995.
The tour is given by Joop Verhulst, chairman of Itteren Town Council. He takes participants along the gravelled-excavated waterways and cultivated nature around Itteren.
