Workshop: Cross-border cooperation in the Euregion

31 August 2015
With the aim of promoting regional knowledge sharing and cross-border cooperation, Bureau Europa is organising several meetings in collaboration with a number of creative entrepreneurs in preparation for the ISOCARP Congress (International Society of City and Regional Planners) in October. The first meeting of New Economy, Old Borders took place on 5 June and was dedicated to sharing the various sub-regions’ visions. Despite different interests, we discovered a need for cooperation.

Connecting the urban agglomerations is necessary for their future. Cooperation is crucial for medium-sized cities in the border region to counterbalance the larger entities of the Ruhr, the Randstad, and the Flemish Diamond. The towns are separated along the border but the cities' collective force of agglomeration in the Meuse-Rhine Euroregion ensures there is a global competitiveness. During the 2nd workshop, the focus will be on linking knowledge hubs to create a transnational knowledge network. Collaboration between the knowledge hubs across the border has become essential, and the RWTH is essential for a strong knowledge-intensive region.

To connect with the subject, this 2nd workshop will also take place at the RWTH in Aachen. During this workshop, there will be a presentation on the MelatenCampus. The presentation serves as an introduction for a workshop where participants research, in groups, opportunities for cross-border cooperation by connecting the knowledge hubs.

The different workshop’s results form a kit of Euro-regional cases, which will be used as the basis for ISOCARP congress’s agenda.
