Digital manufacturing in the ‘tutorial culture’

27 February 2019
During this lecture, Claire Warnier and Dries Verbruggen will translate the 18th-century art and craft culture of Swiss stuccatori into the 21st-century methodology of Unfold Design Studio (Antwerp). This lecture is organized as part of Stucco Storico: the story behind a craft.

Warnier and Verbruggen will talk about digital fabrication, global communities and the 21st-century tutorial culture. Their discourse in the Stucco Storico exhibition is represented through two artworks: Artefacts of a New History and The Stratigraphic Manufactory.

Unfold Design Studio
What is the role of the designer? How does this role change as design and manufacture become increasingly digitized? In their work, Claire and Dries explore new ways of creating, manufacturing, financing and distributing in ever-changing contexts. For example, the two artworks mentioned above consider how a relatively simple design can be shared openly but, through different materials, methods and backgrounds, lead to very diverse results, even a fusion of pre-industrial crafts and technically innovative production methods. Not to mention the skills shared in the many DIY tutorials found on YouTube.
