Designer Christien Meindertsma and artist Elizabeth James-Perry (USA) in conversation about the red and white glass beads.  As part of the In Vitro exhibition, Bureau Europa regularly invites participants in the exhibition to explain work in their own words. On May 16th we welcome designer Christien Meindertsma and artist Elizabeth James-Perry (USA) whom, together with filmmaker Tim van Gils, made the film 'White Heart'. White Heart refers to the type of glass beads that have been spread all over the world from Europe for centuries. First as a commodity to the former colonies, where it is still used today by, among others, the members of Aquinnah Wampanoag on the American northeast coast as a decoration on jewelry and clothing.

Designer Christien Meindertsma has researched the history of the beads and recorded it in a film. The film shows the current trade route of the beads: from the Czech sand mines via the Rotterdam ports to the workshop of artist Elizabeth James-Perry of the Aquinnah Wampanoag tribe, who makes traditional jewelry using age-old crafts. The In Vitro exhibition shows the film and contains the glass beads and necklace that the artist made especially for the exhibition, and which was purchased by the Allard Pierson Museum, where the film and objects have previously been shown.
