12 June 2013On Wednesday 12 June Architectuurcentrum TOPOS Maastricht and Bureau Europa organized a lecture by publicist and researcher Martijn de Waal in the framework of the TOPOS lecture series ‘Raakvlakken’.
LECTURE SERIES 'RAAKVLAKKEN'
Topos Architecture Centre and Bureau Europa organize a lecture series titled ‘Raakvlakken’, specifically organized to broaden the perspective in the field of architecture and urban design. A variety of artists, designers and scientists whose oeuvre is connected to architecture will be invited to bring new inspiration in the debate about urban development with their works and thoughts.
Lectures take place on Wednesday evenings at Bureau Europa, Timmerfabriek, Boschstraat 9, 6211 AS Maastricht.
The lecture room opens at 19h45; lectures start at 20h00 and are concluded with a short discussion.

On Wednesday 12 June Architectuurcentrum TOPOS Maastricht and Bureau Europa organize a lecture by publicist and researcher Martijn de Waal in the framework of the TOPOS lecture series ‘Raakvlakken’.
Martijn de Waal (1972) is a publicist and researcher in the field of digital media and urban culture. Recently, he published ‘De Stad als Interface; hoe nieuwe media de stad veranderen.’ Both the publication and this lecture examine the influence of the omnipresent digital and new media (Smartphone, navigation, security cameras). How do they affect our perception or the design of urban openness. Which consequences will the increasing influence of these media have on concepts like public domain and the (organization of) collectivity, briefly for our way of living together?
Martijn de Waal earned his PhD in 2012 at the University of Groningen, where he is now a member of the research group ‘New Media, Public Sphere and Urban Culture’ at the Faculty of Philosophy. He is also attached to the department of Mediastudies at the University of Amsterdam. In 2009, he was a visiting scholar at the ‘Centre for Future Civic Media’ van MIT in Cambridge, USA.
Together with Michiel de Lange he established ‘The Mobile City’ in 2007. The Mobile City intends to connect all parties that are involved in the design of the urban environment and to exchange knowledge and concepts. This finds expression in a weblog, discussion forums and a research platform that explores the meeting points between the academic theories, the (fast) developments of digital media and the (slow) changes in the built environment.
