Evaluating Alternatives: Marco Vermeulen

8 December 2016
On thursday 8 december, Marco Vermeulen gives a lecture as part of our Evaluating Alternatives series, highlighting the changing roles and business models of the architect and the designer. Based on recent projects, including the Biesbosch MuseumEiland (recipient of three Architizer Awards) and the revision of Klavertje 4, Marco will discuss the necessary broadening of the architectural discipline.

Studio Marco Vermeulen is a design studio for architecture, urban planning, landscape, and research and is based by the river Maas in the centre of Rotterdam. The studio’s portfolio includes many spatial and socially relevant reports that are new or underexposed and ask for typological innovation and originality.

Most of the studio’s projects focus on closing cycles in the fields of water, energy, and raw materials. The studio is often involved in projects where climate change and water security are linked to opportunities for spatial quality.

Studio Marco Vermeulen conducted research for the Dutch government into sustainable heat supply, which led to the Dutch Smart Thermal Grid. Both projects are nominated for the 2016 Dutch Design Awards.
