Duo lecture: Jalila Essaïdi and Mike Thompson

15 November 2016
On 15 November, Jalila Essaïdi and Mike Thompson are Bureau Europa’s guest speakers. They discuss how the interplay between technology, science, art, and design leads to innovation in new areas.

Jalila Essaïdi is a bio-artist and scientist. Coming from Eindhoven, she came to prominence for her research into using a type of tropical spider in the formulation of bulletproof skin. In 2012, Jalila started a bio-art laboratory at Strijp-T. BioArt Lab stimulates innovation and facilitates entrepreneurship, leading to new bio-materials, start-ups, and crossover talents.

Mike Thompson is critical designer, researcher, and educator, drawn to the dark corners of technological research. In 2014, with Susana Cámara Leret, Mike co-founded Thought Collider, an experimental, critical art and design research firm based in Amsterdam. Motivated by emerging technologies, their work explores meanings and values derived from experiencing built environments in alternative ways.
