Changing Ideals: Re-thinking the House

4 November 2008 – 30 April 2009
'Changing Ideals: Re-thinking the House' confronted very different living concepts with each other, ranging from the Domus Cosmographica to the Mauritshuis and the television culture of the the Big Brother House.

For architects, the house presents the perfect place to test and demonstrate new concepts. Some even say that the history of modern architecture coincides with the search for the ideal house, and the house is often referred to as the ultimate paradigm of the architecture of modern times. However, since this ideal manifests in different contexts, the resulting designs are very diverse. In order to investigate the changing ideal of the house, the exhibition ‘Changing Ideals: Re-thinking the House’ brings together an array of different housing concepts, from the Domus Cosmographica of the Mauritshuis to the television culture of the Big Brother house.

In 2008, the NAi Maastricht outlined a research program on the fault line between architecture and design, with the interior as common thread. The third exhibition focuses on the ideal house. ‘Changing Ideals: Re-thinking the House’ is the result of a collaboration between NAiM, Vesteda and TU Delft, curated by Dirk van den Heuvel (DUT).

‘Changing Ideals’ consists of two parts: the different living concepts are displayed in the Kolommenzaal under the title ‘Le Salon Imaginaire’. The selection brings together historical examples and contemporary designs, and avant-garde experiment with mainstream production.

In the Bogenzaal, work by Jurgen Bey and Rianne Makkink is presented under the title ‘Living with Things’. This poetic installation addresses new concepts in the field of architecture and design.

In order to provide further in-depth information concerning the different themes and questions in the exhibition, several ‘salons’ are organized; meetings between designers, critics and experts in the field of housing. In the context of the exhibition, a congress takes place in the spring of 2009, partly in collaboration with the VROM council, who plan to publish a new advice report on new housing ideas.
